 | Title South Africa Under Apartheid (Part 1) Description: 1957 film Apartheid was a system of legal racial segregation enforced by the National Party government in South Africa between 1948 and 1994, under which the rights of the majority black inhabitants of South Africa were curtailed and minority rule by whites was maintained. Racial segregation in South Africa began in colonial times, but apartheid as an official policy was introduced following the general election of 1948. New legislation classified inhabitants into racial groups ("black", "white", "coloured", and "Indian"), and residential areas were segregated by means of forced removals. From 1958, Blacks were deprived of their citizenship, legally becoming citizens of one of ten tribally based self-governing homelands called bantustans, four of which became nominally independent states. The government segregated education, medical care, and other public services, and provided black people with services inferior to those of whites. Apartheid sparked significant internal resistance and violence as well as a long trade embargo against South Africa. A series of popular uprisings and protests were met with the banning of opposition and imprisoning of anti-apartheid leaders. As unrest spread and became more violent, state organizations responded with increasing repression and state-sponsored violence. Republican Party leaders and members and sycophant media personalities seems to have complained mightily at any and every rule the Democratic Party has proposed or passed. Quiet differently, statements by Republicans reveal that their principles are fleeting and may be only for expediency. Congress makes their own rules and that is okay as long as the Republicans are making the rules otherwise expect the Republicans to scream bloody murder every step of the way. Deem and Pass is okay except now when the Democrats want to use it. Republican ethics seems to be tied to the whims of the day. Or maybe it is better to pretend that Deem and Pass has NEVER been used an incredible lie given all of the facts to the contrary. Reminded that he was on the record telling his constituents a falsehood, the good congressman changed his statement to acknowledge that Deem and Pass is not unique to the current health care legislation. Preceding the presidents speech to a gathering of House Democrats, thousands of protesters descended around the Capitol to protest the passage of health care reform. The gathering quickly turned into abusive heckling, as members of Congress passing through Longworth House office building were subjected to epithets and even mild physical abuse. A staffer for Rep. James Clyburn (DS.C.) told reporters that Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) had been spat on by a protestor. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a hero of the civil rights movement, was called a nier. And Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) was called a faggot, as protestors shouted at him with deliberately lisp-y screams. Frank, approached in the halls after the presidents speech, shrugged off the incident. But Clyburn was downright incredulous, saying he had not witnessed such treatment since he was leading civil rights protests in South Carolina in the 1960s.
