Mine was L5-S1, and gave severe symptoms, typical of those dealing with sciatica. Do NOT hold in your coughs and sneezes folks! Believe it or not, my herniation was caused by coughing of all things. After my illness five years ago, my immune system was severely compromised and I was prone to colds and flu constantly. One night I was coughing non-stop, and was concerned about keeping other people up in the house. So I stifled the noise to the best of my ability for quite some time, and woke up the next morning in extreme pain as I tried to rise. If youve never had a herniated disc, nerve pain is certainly a unique kind of pain. It is unlike any muscle ache, or anything youve ever experienced. I actually had no idea what was going on until I called a few people, and it was finally confirmed for sure via magnetic resonance imagery (MRI). The herniation was pronounced and severe. Rising from horizontal or getting out of my car where sheer torture, as were most sleeping and standing positions, lol! It was a brutal three months to endure. In this time I sought surgeons as a possible remedy that I really wanted to avoid. Over the counter anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen were the only things that would just barely tame the pain, and poorly at that.
